  • Me and My MP3

    August 14, 2013

    devotional
    Set:

I am training for a marathon—a grueling task that is even more difficult because I’m training alone. Some training runs have been up to 18 miles—all on my own. When I run it’s just me, the trail, and my MP3 player. Before I decided to do the marathon I told God I wanted to run for His glory. With a month of training to go, I realized something had become all too familiar to me. Even when I didn’t have on headphones, I was singing in my head. I had been listening to my MP3 so often that the songs were in my mind all the time. When I focused on the words, I realized something was wrong.

  • Me Monster

    December 21, 2007

    devotional
    Set:

My all-time favorite comedian is Brian Regan. He is funny and clean--a hard combination to find these days. In one of his routines, he talks about running into a "Me Monster," a guy he doesn't even know who is doing all the talking for everyone else.

  • Measuring the Heart

    February 08, 2005

    devotional
    Set:

Another signing day has passed in college football. The rankings are out and once again colleges like USC, Oklahoma, Florida State and Michigan have locked down the "best" high school athletes in the country. "Blue chippers," high school All-Americans and All-Stars have made their decisions, and now coaches and fans will begin to celebrate their recruiting "victories."

  • Meekness Is Not Weakness

    December 07, 2013

    devotional
    Set:

In Coach John Wooden’s Pyramid of Success, he talks about the character quality of fight, which is a determined effort. He calls it “intensity under control.” A player with fight has a  contained fire burning in his or her belly, which ought to emerge as focused passion.

  • Memorize That Playbook

    January 28, 2014

    devotional
    Set:

Football players come to camp and are handed a binder filled with plays, formations, and adjustments built to withstand any opponent during the season. A lot of work, foresight, and detail went into putting together what could be a championship playbook. However great a playbook may be, though, it is useless without memorization and proper execution.

  • Micah 7:8

    September 10, 2010

    devotional
    Set:

Hockey Chat:  In the 95-96 NHL season something incredible happened.  After not even making it to the playoffs the year before, the underdog of the season was a team in a state that didn’t have many hockey rinks and was hardly a place any NHL’r would imagine a good team would develop. Other teams may have laughed at the thought of this club being a contender but the Florida Panthers made it to the Stanley Cup finals only 3 years after they started up, a record at the time for start up teams to make it that far.

  • Mike’s Hope

    April 01, 2010

    devotional
    Set:

A few days ago I went to the funeral of a huge sports fan whose love for life was evident to all. His name was Mike. His father had worked for FCA for several years and was responsible for getting FCA started in the SEC schools in the 60s and 70s. Mike’s life was full of joy, but it ended tragically with a sudden heart attack. He left this life way too early in my opinion, but his legacy will live on. His life was based on hope in Christ.

  • Mind Games

    September 06, 2013

    devotional
    Set:

At the 70-mile mark I started to cramp up in my calves. I began to “super-hydrate,” attempting to prevent the inevitable. At about that point, there was a “bail out” where riders could take a short-cut to the finish line but not complete the full 105 miles. Determined to press on and complete the ride, I passed it.

  • Mind if I wash your feet?

    April 14, 2011

    devotional
    Set:

Every time a track meet comes around, memories of my past throws (shot put and discus) come rushing back into my mind—all of the times I’ve choked or have failed to do my best. I’m so anxious about how I need to make up for my short comings of the last meet that I never truly enjoy competing. Shame of the past always seems to bring me down.

  • Miracles

    April 08, 2008

    devotional
    Set:

I’m a proud alum today. Last night my University of Kansas Jayhawks won their first NCAA National Title in 20 years—and in pretty dramatic fashion, coming back from a 9-point deficit with about two minutes to go in the second half.
