  • Is It in You?

    September 14, 2009

    devotional
    Set:

I love watching Gatorade® commercials. They show athletes giving everything they have for their sport. The neon green or orange Gatorade® even pours out of them as they sweat! The commercials always end with, “Is it in you?” The implication is that somehow this drink is going to make us perform better on the field. Do we have what it takes to be a champion? Is it in us?

As Christians, God tells us that the Spirit of God, the very essence of Christ, is in us. The same Spirit who raised Jesus from the dead comes to dwell inside of us. When we give our heart to Jesus, the Holy Spirit breathes life into our spirit. He literally brings us back from the dead—spiritually that is. Sin brings death, but the Spirit brings life.

  • Is It In You?

You see it on every sideline. Every team has it and in nearly as many flavors as Baskin Robbins. I'm sure you know what I'm talking about — Gatorade. It is as common to sports as the equipment we use to play. There are many imitations out there, but there is only one true Gatorade. Athletes at all levels consume this product daily to help them feel their best before, during and after a performance. And commercials today ask, "Is it in you?"

  • Is Jesus Enough?

    August 20, 2010

    devotional
    Set:

I had the opportunity to attend a coach's forum in St. Louis while ministering at the Final Four. During the forum, a coach from an NCAA Division II school stood and shared his story. He told how his players asked him to lead pre-game prayers before games and practices and was glad to do it. His administration heard about his participation and wrote him a letter asking him to stop this immediately or he would be let go from his coaching position. He had a choice to make.

The Apostle Paul understood one thing in his ministry. Whether he lived or died, Jesus was always enough for him. As he suffered in prison, in persecution and in the loss of his health and possessions, Paul held firm to one thing -- that Jesus would sustain him. Can we say the same?

  • Is Something Missing?

    devotional
    Set:

How many of you have played with Lego's, Lincoln Logs, or Erector Sets? When you were young the potential for building cool designs was huge. Sometimes my brother would spend hours designing items, and when he was done he usually had a pretty amazing creation. There was no greater frustration, however, than to be missing a piece. You put time into building something perfect and then it couldn't be finished because you were missing a window or door.

  • Is There a Test Today?

    November 21, 2013

    devotional
    Set:

Trials. The Bible doesn’t tell us that trials may happen; it tells that trials are a sure thing. How can we have joy when we face difficult times, when our season is 0–5, when parents are angry that their child sits on the bench, or when our assistants question our every move? How can we be content when we face all of this?

Despite losing yesterday’s Super Bowl to the New York Giants, Patriots’ quarterback Tom Brady seems—from the outside looking in—to have everything: money, fame, a high-profile girlfriend, a winning team and Super Bowl rings. But what about on the inside?

  • Is Your Stomach Growling?

    August 29, 2012

    devotional
    Set:

Have you ever gone to a restaurant that serves bread before the meal and, when the bread got to your table you just stared at it? Say you have just worked out and you are incredibly hungry.  Everyone in the restaurant can hear your stomach growling, but all you do is just sit and stare at the bread. People around you start talking to each other and asking questions like, “Why are you just staring at the bread? Eat it!” But you just sit and stare, wondering why you aren’t satisfied.

Hockey Chat: Martin Brodeur was a one great forward of his young age, skating hard and scoring goals.  Those of you that know Marty as the goaltender from the New Jersey Devils think I’ve got the wrong guy, but not at all.  He started skating when he was 3 years old and played to put pucks in the net.  He was a forward for the early years of his hockey days.  That all changed one day when he was 6 and the goal tender for his team didn’t show up for a game.  Coach asked told him to get in net and he’s been stopping goals ever since.

  • It Happens

    November 01, 2008

    devotional
    Set:

It happens all the time: As an athlete or coach, you are confronted with a situation in which your attitude will dictate your altitude. Someone does you wrong; a promise is broken; a ref makes a horrible call in a game; you are treated poorly. Whatever the circumstances, does your attitude show that God is in your life?

In his letter to the Philippians, Paul urged the believers to stand firm in their faith in Christ. Paul wanted everyone to stay focused on Christ and the glory of the cross, no matter what happened. In every situation we are under the authority of God, and we should act and react accordingly. Though we may be wronged, mistreated or severely tortured, we must stand firm, knowing that God will provide the victory.
